Lubbock-Cooper South Elementary
Library Policies
Our library has over 19,300 items available for circulation. We subscribe to Renaissance Place Enterprise, which gives us access to over 120,100 Accelerated Reader quizzes. Any new quiz is immediately available to us.
The library is open and available at all times to all students during school hours. Classes come to the library either two or three times a week, depending on a week’s red or black schedule. On Monday and Tuesday, we either read stories or work on a lesson. On Wednesday and Thursday, we check out books. On Friday we have free reading for Accelerated Reader, or we read stories, depending on the grade level. Individuals are allowed to come to the library at any time during the day to check out books or to take AR tests.
Kindergarten students begin checking out books during the second six weeks. They are allowed to check out one book per week, but they do not take books home. The kindergarten teachers keep the books in a reading center, and the teachers read many of the books to the students during the week.
First grade students are allowed to check out one book at a time and are allowed to take the books home. The students may visit the library at any time to check out another book. Books are checked out for one week. First grade students are not charged fines for overdue books. Students will pay damage fines, and the fine amount will be determined by the librarian. Students must pay for lost or severely damaged books. Parents will be notified when a student has lost or damaged a book. If the lost book is found and is in good shape, a full refund will be given. First grade students begin the Accelerated Reader program. AR requirements are set by the homeroom teachers.
Second, third, fourth, and fifth grade students are allowed to check out two books at a time. The students may visit the library at any time to check out additional books. Books are checked out for one week but may be rechecked. If a student needs to recheck a book, he must bring the book to the library. Fines are charged for overdue books. Five cents per day per item will be levied, excluding weekends, holidays, and excused absences. Books must be presented before fine money will be accepted. If students forget books on Wednesday or Thursday, students are given a grace period until Friday, and fines will not be charged until the following Monday. Students will pay damage fines, and the fine amount will be determined by the librarian. Students must pay for lost or severely damaged books. Parents will be notified when a student has lost or damaged a book. If a lost book is found, a refund will be given. The normal fine of five cents per day overdue will be subtracted from the refund. Second, third, fourth, and fifth grade students continue with the Accelerated Reader program. AR requirements are set by the homeroom or reading teachers.
Reference books and periodicals must be used in the library by students, but teachers are permitted to check them out for classroom use. Only faculty members are allowed to check out nonprint materials.
